Read Chapter One of MORE THAN FRIENDS!

January 10, 2025 by Rachel Hamilton

First, I hope you and yours are safe and well. With fires raging in California and winter weather on the way for many of us, I’d love to hear from you, so please check in and let me know that you’re okay . I’ll be heading out shortly to get a few supplies before the storm hit tomorrow.

Tomorrow is release day for More Than Friends! So I’ll be holed up here with my fireplace raging, burrowed beneath a pile of blankets, hoping we maintain power. But I’ll also be doing some fun posts and giveaways in the Coffee, Cupcakes, and Contemporaries group here. So feel free to join us on Friday.

In the meantime, keep reading for a sneak peek of Chapter One. Chapter Two is coming tomorrow.

GRAB IT HERE

Best friends. Only one bed. What’s the worst that could happen?

Leilani
Toby and I dated in high school. The romance didn’t last, but I got a friend for life. I’m a session singer, he’s an A&R rep, and we live on opposite coasts. Still, we’ve been best friends since high school. Okay, yes there’s occasionally some innocent flirting, but nothing serious. Neither of us would risk our friendship by getting involved again. But one long overdue wedding, a couple bottles of champagne, a few too many shots, and a little flirting turns into one incredible night. It was a mistake. And it definitelyโ€ฆprobablyโ€ฆwon’t happen again.

Toby
For a long time, I accepted that Leilani and I were better as friends than lovers. But lately, our โ€œinnocentโ€ flirtations incite the filthiest thoughts, and I can’t stop wanting her. When playful teasing turns to a heated kiss, it ends in a night neither of us will ever forget. Leilani declares it a mistake, but I propose friendship with benefits, and she agrees. But the truth is I can’t ignore my growing feelings for her anymore. I’m determined to prove that we could be so much more than friends and that taking a chance on finding forever is worth the risk.

Leilani

โ€œLeilani, dear, we can hear you.โ€ My mother lightly taps her diamond-studded ear. Her voice is low and syrupy sweet. Her big, round eyesโ€”which mirror my ownโ€”dart around Toast on Lennox in Midtown Atlanta, where we’re eating brunch. โ€œNo need to broadcast your business to the entire restaurant.โ€

โ€œYes, ma’am.โ€ My face and neck burn as hot as the surface of the sidewalk on this Sunday afternoon on Labor Day weekend.

All my life, I’ve been told that I’m too much. Too loud. Too bold. Too high strung. Yet somehow I’m all of that while also managing to never be quite enough. Just ask anyone.

The teachers who told me how smart I was and how far I could go if only I’d apply myself a little more. The jobs I got but could never stick with because I found them overwhelming, I was bored out of my skull, or I tried to whoop the manager’s ass for being shitty to me or a co-worker one too many times. The vocal teachers who swore I could be the next big thing if only I was a little more disciplined. Or my parents: Dr. James Stephens and Barbara Stephens, Esquire.

He’s a podiatrist to the starsโ€”athletes, mostly. She’s a lawyer for an elite investment firm. Neither of them would’ve chosen session singer as the career they imagined for their only child. In fact, they spent my entire childhood debating whether I should become a doctor or a lawyer. College dropout definitely wasn’t on the menu. But what can I say? I’m an off-the-menu kind of girl.

I’m the polar opposite of my high-achieving, stop-making-excuses-and-just-get-it-done parents. I’m also the complete opposite of my best friend, Tobias Hanlon. We were Peachtree School of the Arts’ very own Odd Couple. He’s neat, organized, and fastidious, as my mother loves to say, while I’m โ€œchaos personified.โ€ Also, a direct quote from my mom.

Toby, whom I dragged to this brunch with my parents, is seated beside me in a matching green velvet chair. He squeezes my thigh beneath the table, and it shakes me from my daze to find everyone looking at me expectantly.

โ€œUhโ€ฆ yes?โ€ I say, since the three of them are obviously waiting for me to say something.

Maybe my mother asked me for the hundredth time when I’m going to get serious about my life, settle down, and give them grandchildren.

โ€œAren’t you going to finish your story, baby girl?โ€ My father forks a generous piece of his jumbo lump crab cake and dips it into the garlic aioli sauce before lifting it to his mouth.

I watch with envy as he takes a bite. His entire face lights up as he savors the morsel.

โ€œStory?โ€ I look down at my own plate. As much as I adore the Strawberry Shortcake French Toast here, suddenly I’m in the mood for something more savory than sweet.

โ€œYes, darling,โ€ my mother says. To her credit, I can tell she’s doing her best not to lose her patience. โ€œYou were telling us a story about when you were in the studio the other dayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œStudio?โ€ My mind is on Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and garlic aioli sauce. Or maybe Fried Catfish and Grits. Also, I’m not one hundred percent sure I turned off my garment steamer after I steamed this linen sundress which looks more wrinkled now, after an hour of wear, than it did before I steamed it.

โ€œYou were telling your parents about your conversation with Ced and Ward about working with more of their artists at Peachtree Records,โ€ Toby offers with an encouraging smile. The kind that hits you down deep and you can’t help smiling, too.

I’m reminded of all the reasons I love this manโ€ฆ as my best friend, not as more than friends. We’ve been there and done that. The love connection didn’t work out. At sixteen, they rarely do. Instead, we became besties for life. And I couldn’t ask for a better best friend.

Toby Hanlon is my ride or die, and I don’t play about him. As more than one of his two-timing exes discovered the hard way.

โ€œRight.โ€ I broaden my smile, though I can’t help stealing glances of my father throwing down on that crab cake. โ€œWhat Toby said.โ€

โ€œThat’s it? That’s the entire story?โ€ My mother puts down her fork and delicately dabs the corners of her mouth with a napkin. โ€œI thought you were going to say they offered you a deal like Karris and Nikki.โ€

My eyes drift closed momentarily. I take a deep breath and count to five in my head. Then I cock my head and force a smile.

โ€œI’m a session singer, Mom. That means I provide background vocals and harmonies and occasionally features on other artists’ projects. Tour with them sometimes. But always on a contract basis.โ€ I speak slowly, carefully enunciating each word as I try to strain the annoyance and resentment from my voice.

Despite being labeled a rebel, I’m a Southern girl who was raised to respect my elders. And I live with the very real fear that my late maternal grandmother Fannie Alexander would rise out of her final resting place back in Panama and whoop my ass for being disrespectful to my mama.

โ€œI’m aware of what a session vocalist does, darling. My point is that you’ve been doing it for quite some time. Don’t you want more than that at this point in your life, sweetheart?โ€ There’s a hint of desperation in my mother’s voice.

โ€œNot that there’s anything wrong with being a session singer,โ€ my father quickly jumps in, waving the piece of crab cake on his fork as he speaks, sending the savory scent in my direction. โ€œAfter all, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, John Legend, Whitney Houstonโ€ฆ they all started off as background singers, too.โ€

โ€œThey also actually wanted to be lead singers. I don’t.โ€ I stare at my father’s plate. I tear my gaze away to meet my mother’s again. โ€œI love singing background vocals and harmonies, and sometimes writing a few lyrics,โ€ I add.

โ€œBut you have such a beautiful voice, Leilani,โ€ my mother objects.

โ€œVoice like an angel.โ€ My father beams, taking another bite of his crab cake.

โ€œShe does.โ€ Toby’s deep, sexy voice and broad smile calm my rising irritation and the panicky feeling of a cat being backed into a corner. โ€œLei’s vocals and input add texture and layers to a song. She’s helped turn several good songs into chart-topping, award-winning songs. What she does is mostly behind the scenes, but it makes a huge impact. That’s why she’s so in-demand right now. But if she accepts Peachtree’s offer to work with more of their artists, that means she’ll be spending a lot more time back here in Atlanta.โ€

โ€œYou mean we’d get to see a whole lot more of our baby girl?โ€ my dad asks excitedly. โ€œWell, we certainly can’t be mad about that, now can we, Barbie?โ€

We all turn to look at my mother. Because the only thing she bugs me about more than getting serious about my life and giving her grandbabies is the fact that she wishes I’d come home to visit more often.

โ€œWell, I meanโ€ฆ of course, having you home more often would be nice.โ€

My mother, who is a shark at the negotiation table is now stumbling and stuttering. I can’t lie, I’m kind of enjoying it.

โ€œDoes that mean you’ll be ditching your overpriced apartment in New York and moving back home?โ€ My mother picks up her fork and spears a few roasted potatoes and pops them into her mouth.

Just like that, the goodwill and happy feelings have evaporated like morning fog.

โ€œThe industry is growing here in Atlanta,โ€ Toby interjects as he takes my hand, balled into a fist beneath the table. โ€œBut New York is still the center of the industry with LA being a close second.โ€

โ€œIt’s too bad you didn’t choose LA, baby girl. Then at least I’d know Toby was there to look out for you,โ€ Dad grumbles.

โ€œThen she’d be twice as far away,โ€ Mom complains.

โ€œBut at least she’d have someone we trust looking after her.โ€ Dad’s voice is tight and his nostrils flare.

โ€œFirst of all, I’m thirty-five. I can take care of myself.โ€ Barely, but I don’t add that part. โ€œSecond, Toby does look out for me. All the time. Even though we live on opposite coasts. Just like you and your sorors look out for each other even though you’re scattered all over the country.โ€

My mother sucks her teeth and gives me a side-eye, her mouth twisted. A concession that I’ve won this round, but we’ll be coming back to it soon.

Toby squeezes the hand that’s no longer balled into a fist and I squeeze his back, grateful he agreed to come to brunch with me.

What I'm Reading

It’s been a weird few weeks for me. I’ve done a TON of writing. Nearly 60,000 words in a month which is more than insane for me. But to balance out that level of intense output, I’ve also watched a lot of movies and read more books in a week than I’d read the previous few months. Here are a few of the books I’ve been reading:

Sinnamon & Golds by Lady Marie

Sinnamon & Goldsย by Lady Marie was a quick, fun ride. I literally read the entire thing while taking an extra long bubble bath. The book is set at Thanksgiving (the day I actually read it). It was steamy and messy with lots of family drama. This was my first Lady Marie book, but I’ve already downloaded my next one.

Ares by Asia Monique EROS by Stephanie Nicole Norris

Aresย by Asia Monique andย Erosย by Stephanie Nicole Norris,ย the Love and War series, has been sitting on my Kindle for the longest. I finally made time to read them.ย Aresย is the soft and fluffy read with a romance between a sunshiney, star-gazing, geek girl scientist and a grumpy club co-owner whose father is the mayor of Houston. I loved this couple and watching him fall for her so quickly.ย Erosย is the more amiable of the two brothers, but his story is anything but soft and fluffy. This one brings the drama with a capital D. The heroine is part of a dangerous underworld and begins the story by challenging the current leader of the shadowy organization in a fight to the death. You’ll need a strong stomach because you can practically feel the blows in these well-written fight scenes. But if you love reading about alpha men who will do whatever it takes to protect the women they love, these two authors have got you.

Surrender by Kimberly Brown Passion by Monica Walters

The Arranged Hearts Seriesย is an author collaboration of stories about couples who are tired of the dating scene and choose to go through an agency that finds the perfect match for them. The catch is they won’t meet that perfect match until the two of them are standing at the altar. So far I’ve readย Surrenderย by Kimberly Brownโ€”a new favorite author,ย Passionย by Monica Walters, and I just startedย Allureย by Iesha Bree. Next up areย Desireย by Kay Shanee,ย Tensionย by C. Monet, andย Embraceย by Mya. I’m loving this series, and can’t wait to finish it.

A Stalker's Prey by K.D. Richards

West Investigations Seriesย by K.D. Richards has been a favorite of mine since the release of Book One:ย Pursuit of Justice. I read and loved the first several books, then started to fall behind on this now 12-book-long ongoing series. But I just finishedย A Stalker’s Preyย and just startedย Under Lock and Key. If you like romantic thrillers, I highly recommend the series. But note that this particular imprint goes hard with the crime/thriller elements and the heat level is much lower. But K.D. does a great job of keeping both the story tension and the romantic tension between the characters going throughout.

Books I Hope to Read Sooner Than Later

I Like You Like That by Kayla Gross

I Like You Like Thatย by Kayla Gross has been on my TBR forever. So I’m really hoping to get this one read before the end of the year.ย

One Bed by Joss Wood
One Bedย by Joss Wood is a forced proximity story (one of my Top 5 romance tropes), which will be available as an audiobook and e-book on New Year’s Eve. Joss is an author friend I’ve collaborated with on several Harlequin series. I love her voice and stories, so I’m looking forward to this one.

December 6, 2024 by ReeseRyan

Can you believe that this year is already winding down? There are only three and a half weeks left of 2024. Is there something you’d like to accomplish before the year is over? Is there something you’re really looking forward to doing in 2025? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

What Iโ€™m Watching: The Christmas Movies Edition!

Promotional graphic for Meet Me Next Christmas, courtesy of Netflix.
Christina Milian, Devale Ellis, and Kofi Siriboe star in Meet Me Next Christmas on Netflix.

Confession: I’m not a Christmas person. My favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard. Don’t think Die Hard is a Christmas movie? Fight me.  Nevertheless, right now, I am on a Christmas movie kick.

I’ve watched more Christmas movies in the past few weeks than I’ve probably watched over the past twenty years. (Unless you count the fact that I’ve seen Home Alone about fifty ‘leven times.) So here are the movies I watched (and remember) from the past few weeks from my favorite to my least favorite.

Meet Me Next Christmas

This movie, pictured above, was super cute. Christina Milian is adorable and one of my rom-com faves right now. Layla and James cross paths in an airport lounge during the holidays and really hit it off, but she’s engaged to someone else. He suggests that if they’re both free next Christmas, they should meet at the Pentatonix Christmas concert in New York. Fast forward to the following Christmas when she is indeed free. She is willing to do whatever it takes to get a ticket to the sold-out concert. She even hires Teddyโ€”who she also crossed paths with in that airport loungeโ€”to help her track down a ticket. This movie was so much fun. It made me laugh a lot. This scene with Kalen Allen where he’s teaching them to dance is hilarious. And if you like the group Pentatonix, you’re going to love this because they are a key part of the story.

Our Little Secret

The Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan has been a family favorite of ours for years. And I loved her in this movie where she goes to her boyfriend’s family’s house for Christmas only to discover that her boyfriend’s sister is dating her ex. She begs him to keep their little secret and then tries to avoid him. But of course the two of them keep getting thrown together. The movie is cute, funny, and filled with lots of emotion. Ian Harding might be my favorite Christmas movie beau.

The Noel Diary

The Noel Diary, a Netflix Movie

This one strikes a different chord than most of the others on the list, which are rom-coms or straight up comedies. The Noel Diary is deeply emotional. Rachel, who is adopted, shows up at the address she learns her biological mother once lived at. Jake, a bestselling author, is there cleaning out the house of his estranged mother who recently died. She was a hoarder and it’s a massive job. Jake doesn’t remember Rachel’s mother, who was his nanny when he was quite young. The only other person who might have more information about Rachel’s biological mother is Jake’s father whom he hasn’t spoken to in years. These two go on a journey that will help them heal old wounds and discover a new beginning.

Falling for Christmas

Another Lindsay Lohan movie. This one reminds me very much of Overboard with Goldie Hawn. Wealthy hotel heiress Sierra takes a tumble down a snowy hill. Jake, who runs the tiny inn on the verge of going under, genuinely doesn’t realize who the woman he rescues is. (A marked improvement from the premise of Overboard.) Sierra awakes with amnesia and is a pretty demanding patient who the hospital workers can’t wait to get rid of. Jake and his daughter offer her a place to stay until someone comes looking for her. It was a cute, feel-good movie, and I loved watching our pampered princess grow, become self-sufficient, and find her own voice and her place in the world.

Operation Christmas Drop

I didn’t know if I could handle a movie with a political angle right now. But this movie was good, and I really enjoyed it. Erica, a political aide is sent to an Air Force base to look for reasons to shut it down on behalf of the senator she works forโ€”who is trying to avoid the closure of a base in her own district.  Erica is hard-nosed and by the book. And she has political aspirations. Yet, as she gets to know Andrew, the big-hearted pilot who runs Operation Christmas Drop and the islanders the program helps, her mission changes. If you’re looking for a movie that will give you the warm and fuzzies and embodies the spirit of Christmas, this is the one. The romance was only a minor part of the movie for me.

Christmas With a Kiss

I really liked this movie. Mona, a social media influencer is called home to run her family’s Christmas Marketโ€”the last thing she wants to do. She finds herself in a love triangle with Fletcher, her high school beau, and Dez, the reporter sent to write a story about her family’s Christmas market. It’s your typical Hallmark big city girl discovers how much she misses her small hometown movie. Still, it was worth the watch. I saw someone say they thought Mona ended up with the wrong guy. I disagree. When you look at the big picture of what each of them really wanted in life, I believe she ended up with just the right guy.

Best. Christmas. Ever!

Cheating here because I watched this movie last year. But I enjoyed it and I’m adding it to the list. Singer Brandy plays Jackie Jennings who seems to have the perfect life. When her old friend, Charlotte, and her family get stranded by a blizzard, Jackie generously invites them to stay with her family. Charlotte is envious of Jackie. It feels like her life is a mess while Jackie is the perfect hostess, has the perfect family, and just seems to do everything right. But the two women learn that nothing is ever quite as it seems. A fun family movie with lots of heart.

Holiday Rush

What happens when spoiled, privileged children suddenly lose everything? They learn some hard lessons about life and what love and family truly mean. A popular radio DJ loses his job unexpectedly. He and his executive producer decide to buy their own radio station and forge ahead with their plans, but the evil rival company will do anything it can to put a stop to them.

The standout in this one for me is definitely Sonequa Martin-Green. I’m not a Walking Dead kind of person. So I need to check her out in Star Trek: Discovery.

Merry Gentleman

A woman who has spent her entire career as a Belle (think Rockettes) is fired for being too old. She returns to her small hometown to discover her parents’ bar and grillโ€”once the center of the townโ€”isn’t doing well and her parents are several months behind on their rent. She decides to put on a male revue show to raise the money and get her parents out of the hole.

Cute concept, and I honestly didn’t dislike any of the characters. Still, it was my least favorite on the list by far.

Bonus: Irish Wish

Irish Wish, Netflix Movie

This one wasn’t a Christmas movie, but it definitely had Christmas movie vibes. I watched it during my Lindsay Lohan movie marathon. It’s about a book editor who is in love with the author whose book she edited. Only, he falls for and gets engaged to her best friend instead. While in Ireland for the wedding, she wishes it was her marrying him instead. Naughty Saint Brigid obliges. Only maybe the thing our heroine wanted so badly isn’t what she needs at all.

There are lots of things in this movie you can take a jab atโ€”from the questionable accents to quite a few other elements. Still, I enjoyed the movie. Ed Speelers is my second favorite Movie Bae on this list. I just wish he’d gotten more screen time.

New Release Date for MORE THAN FRIENDS + Men for Hire Sale + Holly Jolly Holiday Party!

November 30, 2024 by Rachel Hamilton

In this episode of Life Be Lifing: there is a new release date for More Than Friends: A Second Chance Friends to Lovers Romance. You’ll have to wait just a few more weeks for Toby and Leilani’s love story. The new release date is Friday, January 10, 2025.

I’m having so much fun with these two. Leilani is a mess, but I love her. And Toby is such a cinnamon roll sweetheart who just wants to take care of the people he loves. Both characters are on a complex journey of growth and self-discovery as they discover new things about each other. I love that for them, and I can’t wait for you all to meet them

How are things going for you this week? Tell me what you’ve been up to and what you’re reading here.

One unique agency. Three best friends. And the three women who turn their worlds upside down.

Welcome to the At Your Service agency, where you can hire a man for anything from landscape design to being your fake boyfriend. But finding the right man for the job just might lead to happily ever after.

Boyfriend for Hire: When the one-night stand who ghosted At Your Service’s VP of marketing shows up out of the blue asking him to pose as her boyfriend for a game-changing work function, he can’t say no. And neither of them can resist their growing feelings for each other.

Fiancรฉ for Hire: He’s a model, actor, and budding filmmaker. She’s a former professional basketball player. Neither of them was looking for loveโ€ฆuntil his matchmaking aunt helped them find each other.

Date for Hire: When a record company exec’s new landscape designer shows up at her front door, the last thing she expects is to revisit her painful past. Will she get a second chance at romance with her unrequited high school crush? Or is she destined for another heartbreak?

I’m so grateful for the wonderful reception you’ve given Nick and Emerie’s story, The Soulmate Project. Many of you have asked if Kassie will get her own story. Others have asked about Izzy and Blaze.

Here’s what I can tell you right now: I absolutely have stories on deck for Kassie, Blaze, and Izzy. How those books will be published is a completely different story. As of now, there are no plans to publish more in the series with the current publisher. But I am committed to giving those characters their own stories. In fact, I started both Kassie’s and Blaze’s stories several years ago. So the question is simply when and how those stories will be delivered. For that, stay tuned.

Don’t miss these FR33 and discounted books GALORE!

November 13, 2024 by Rachel Hamilton

Get in here, friend, because you are not going to want to miss this. Today kicks off the annual Black Readers Appreciation Event, taking place November 12th through 15th. That’s five days in which you can download HUNDREDS of free books by Black authors by visiting this link: https://www.brae.website/

You’ll find my book, Spin the Block available free this week only here: https://amzn.to/4fkneeN

Let me know here which new-to-you authors you’ll be checking out, thanks to this incredible event.

She needs a favor from her ex…again.
This time, he has a few demands.

Karris

Five years ago, I was the reigning princess of pop. Now, I’m just a former boy band member’s ex. I’ve been in this business a long time, so I’ve developed a tough skin. But negative press is hijacking my fundraising campaign to save my performing arts high school in Atlanta from being demolished. Desperate times call for desperate measures. So to spin the story my way, I’ve asked celebrity DJ Ward Hughes to reprise his role as my fake boyfriendโ€”a stunt we pulled in high school. But this time, Ward has demands.

Ward

I started out spinning records in underground clubs in Atlanta and rose to fame playing sets at legendary clubs and festivals all over the world. Ten years in, and I’m tired of grueling, international tours and living out of hotel rooms. I’m ready to shift gears and become a songwriter and record producer. But A-list artists are reluctant to work with an unproven writer and producer. Working on Karris’s comeback album will give me the chance to showcase my pen game and production skills while helping her make music with a soulful vibe she was truly meant to sing.

But faking it as high school sweethearts who spin the block hits a little too close to home because nothing about our feelings has ever really been fake.

Remember the fun Men for Hire collaboration project I did with authors Sharon C. Cooper and Delaney Diamond? Well, we’ve decided to put the entire series on sale for $1.99. So if you haven’t read this series yet, you’re in for a treat. Download this fun, steamy series set in Atlanta that follows three best friends who each find the woman who turns their worlds upside down. Come for the romance. Get the fun banter between friends as a bonus. ๐Ÿ˜‰

When former high school classmates unexpectedly reunite, will it be a second chance at romance with her unrequited crush?

When Amaya Walker hires a landscape designer, the last person she expects is her unrequited high school crush. She was the chubby nerd. He was the handsome heartbreaker who was out of her league. But now this plus-size diva is a record exec who’s calling the shots.

Jet Thomas deeply regrets not asking Amaya out in high school, but as a client, she’s off-limits. Their rekindled friendship leads to a forbidden relationship, but can it survive insecurities, family obligations, and secrets from the past?

Please note: This story references teasing and bullying in high school, loss of a sibling, and the realities of being a future caregiver for an adult on the autism spectrum.

Four Reasons Readers are Loving THE SOULMATE PROJECT!ย

November 9, 2024 by Rachel Hamilton

We’ve made it to the end of a long, hard week. Sending out love and hugs and hoping that you are taking good care of yourself and finding joy in nature, time with friends and family, and your favorite books.

Have you read Nick and Emerie’s story, The Soulmate Project, yet? If not, here’s what readers are saying about why they couldn’t get enough of their story.

Even the simplest, briefest reviews mean so much to authors. Here are two reasons:

  1. With so many books on the market, your review offersย social proofย to fellow readers that the book isย worth their time and investment.
  2. Once a book hits a certain number of reviews on a retail site, it will beย recommended to other readers.

So if you’ve read and enjoyed The Soulmate Project, it would mean so much if you dropped a quick review of the book on one of your favorite retails sites. And don’t forget your local library website. Books can be reviewed there, too.

Three Reasons NOT to Miss THE SOULMATE PROJECT!

October 12, 2024 by Rachel Hamilton

It’s another week and yet another hurricane has rolled through and wreaked havoc in communities and the people residing in them. If you’ve been impacted by Hurricane Milton or you’d like to update me on how you and your family have fared through Hurricane Helene, please drop me a line here.

Earlier this week marked the release day of The Soulmate Projectโ€”the final book in my Holly Grove Island series. If you haven’t picked up your copy of the book yet, here are three reasons not to miss Nick and Emerie’s friends-to-love journey.

#1 Em’s Journey is an Empowering One

When Emerie makes the brave decision to finally tell her best friend that she’s in love with him and he doesn’t feel the same, she resolves not to spend another day pining for someone who doesn’t want her. Instead, she puts her energy into becoming her best self. The kind of person who will attract her ultimate soulmate. It’s a lesson that can be applied to relationships, friendships, or jobs. When faced with rejection, don’t wallow; invest in yourself. It’s a lesson I personally identified with and am applying to my own life regarding my writing career.

#2 Fun with Friends and Family

If you’ve read any of my other books, you know how much I adore having fun with my secondary characters. Straight-talking friends; well-meaning parents; annoying siblings; meddling, matchmaking grannies; colorful, local shop owners; and more. My philosophy when it comes to writing is thatโ€”as in real lifeโ€”none of us exist in a vacuum. A variety of elements culminated to make us who we are. Our family, friends, and circumstances are a huge part of that. The secondary characters in a story help me bring the main characters’ story to life. And just as readers enjoy revisiting past characters from a series, so do I. So I loved that Dexter, Dakota, Garrett, Sinclair, Izzy, and Mama Mae all had a role to play in Nick and Emerie’s love story.

#3 Friends Really Do Make the Best Lovers

I’m not saying that friends-to-lovers is the best romance trope, but it’s definitely in my Top Five Romance Tropes. (Second chance, enemies-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, best friend’s younger sibling, forced proximity, in case you were wondering.) But I’m not talking about romantic fiction right now; I’m talking real life. And no, I’m not saying that you need to fall in love with your supposedly platonic best friend in order to have a long-lasting relationship. But developing a true friendship with the person you love makes for a more fun relationship filled with laughter. Gives you someone’s shoulder to cry on through rough times. Someone to share secrets with. Someone who will cheer you on through disappointments. Someone who gets you and loves you despite your flaws or maybe even sees the flip side of those flaws and thinks of them as your superpower. So whether you were childhood friends, high school sweethearts, or complete strangers whose marriage was arranged, building and nurturing a true, deep friendship makes for the best relationships.

If you’ve already read Nick & Em’s story, The Soulmate Project, let me know here if you agree with my assessment. And if you missed the excerpts I shared earlier this week, you’ll find them at the links below:

  • Chapter Two
