“Everything good, Zo?”
His friend glanced down at her clasped hands before finally meeting his gaze again. “I know you have an appointment to get to, but could you spare ten minutes? I really need to talk to you about something.”
“Of course.” Dallas slipped on his shoes, then patted the space beside him on the bed. “Sit.”
Zora sank onto the mattress, her denim-clad knee brushing against his. Her soft scent—a mixture of floral and citrus notes—tickled his nostrils. The warmth from her brown skin seemed to embrace him. His heart beat a little faster, and he willed other parts of his body to behave.
She’s your best friend. Mind out of the gutter, pal.
It wasn’t as if he hadn’t sat beside Zora on his bed before—both as kids and adults. But not since their unexpected kiss.
Dallas swallowed hard, hoping that his friend wasn’t about to utter the words he constantly feared. That this would be their last adventure together because she’d fallen in love with some guy who couldn’t deal with their friendship.
“What is it that you want to talk to me about?” It alarmed him that Zora Abbott—who had never in her life been at a loss for words—suddenly seemed reluctant to say what was on her mind. He covered her hand, flattened on the bed between them, with his much larger one and squeezed. “You know you can talk to me about anything, right? This—” he used his free hand to gesture between them “—is a judgment-free zone. Always has been, always will be. So whatever you need to say or ask—”
“I want to have a baby,” Zora said abruptly. The words rushed from her mouth like a torrent of water, suddenly unleashed. She turned to him, her eyes searching his, as if gauging his reaction. “Not down the road when the right guy comes along,” she added. “I want to have a baby now, Dallas.”
He was sure his heart had stopped momentarily. After all these years of friendship, Zora Abbott had a gift for surprising him. But never more than right now.
“You want to have a baby?” Dallas stammered, feeling a little light-headed. His throat was dry, and his heart was trying its best to beat right out of his chest.
She nodded, staring at him expectantly. For the first time in a long time, the invincible Zora Abbott seemed vulnerable.
There were few things in the world Dallas would refuse this woman. But was Zora really asking him to father her child?
